HAMILTON (Atlantic County) — Seven South Jersey residents are being credited by police for lifting a car off a driver at a crash scene on Sunday.

Hamilton Police said the woman was driving around a curve when she lost control of her vehicle on Weymouth Road around 1:30 p.m., went off the road, hit a tee and was ejected. As the woman landed, the vehicle overturned on top of her.

Police said seven people stopped to help. Maria Gallagher, Harry Gallagher, Nereida Santos, Michael Braunius, Mignalys Vidal, Savannah Asencio and Jason Sabol lifted the vehicle so that  Sgt. Michael Schnurr — who responded along with Sgt. Michael Virga — could pull the driver out from underneath.

Assistance at the scene was also provided by the Township of Hamilton Rescue Squad, Weymouth Volunteer Fire Department, and AtlantiCare Paramedics, police said.

The woman, whose identity was not disclosed by police, was flown to Atlantic City Medical Center with critical injuries but is expected to recover, according to police.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
