The joint base is the state's second largest employer and contributes $3 billion  to the state's economy annually according to a study from Rutgers University.

Menendez said the base is a powerful economic driver for the government and private sectors.

"In terms of tax proceeds that go to municipalities and the state of New Jersey, in terms of the ripple effect the base has with private contractors - it's huge."

Menendez said keeping the base vital for military operations keeps it safe from budget cuts and Base Realignment And Closure lists.

"I think the more that you can enhance the mission at one of your bases the more that you can ensure the infrastructure and other challenges are met early on."

The Joint Base is the only tri-service base in the nation.
