NEWARK — A 3-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries where she was struck by an ambulance on a city street, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Spokeswoman Katherine Carter said the girl, whose name she did not disclose, was hit at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Hobson Street in the afternoon.

She did not name the company or hospital the ambulance came from but said it was heading to Newark Beth Israel Hospital to pick up a patient.

Carter said the ambulance's lights and siren were not on at the time.

The girl was taken to University Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
