According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Ioannis Kapantaise, 69, of Park Ridge was killed in the crash and Maochia Hu, 64, of Montvale succumbed to his injuries Monday. The men suffered the fatal injuries when a 2016 Volvo driven by a 61-year-old Park Ridge resident struck the victims as they were walking in the area of Park Avenue and Diedtrich Lane in Park Ridge around 7:54 p.m.

According to an investigation, police say the driver of the Volvo, identified as James Duncan, 61, of Park Ridge, was traveling west on Park Avenue when his vehicle left the roadway in the area of Diedtrich Lane. The car struck the two pedestrians and struck the two pedestrians. Authorities determined that Hu had just crossed Diedtrich Lane. He had been walking westbound in the crosswalk, and was struck as he reentered the sidewalk on Park Avenue.

Police believe Kapantais was walking eastbound on the sidewalk when he was struck by the Volvo as he approached the Diedtrich Lane crosswalk.

Following the crash, police say Duncan remained on the scene and was examined at the scene and was examined by first responders but suffered no injuries and refused transport to a hospital.

"He has since been examined by medical practitioners and was admitted to Valley Hospital for evaluation," the Prosecutor's Office said.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. No criminal or motor vehicle charges have been filed yet, authorities said Tuesday.
