Toms River police say 30-year-old Jagit Singh-Kandah of Lakewood was walking south across Route 70, near Whitesville Road, when he was struck around 11:20 p.m. Saturday. He was hit in the westbound lane by a car driven by Albert Gesualdo, a 67-year-old Manchester Township resident.

The impact injured Singh-Kandah, who was lying in the roadway when he was struck moments later by a small boxy sport-utility vehicle that also was headed westbound on Route 70. That vehicle initially pulled into a nearby pharmacy, but then soon fled the scene.

Singh-Kandah was taken to a hospital, but died there about an hour after the accident occurred.

No charges have been filed.
