Two construction workers were also injured in Saturday’s crash, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the northbound truck lanes near Interchange 12 in Carteret. Witnesses say the car veered into the left shoulder and hit the back of a vehicle used to protect workers at the work site.

State Police Sgt. Brian Polite says the driver, 31-year-old Marvin Deleon-Quinonez of Pleasantville, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger sitting behind him, Tono Alarcon of Westchester, later died at a hospital.

Another passenger, Freddy Morena of Westchester, suffered serious injuries and remained hospitalized Sunday.

But the fourth passenger and two construction workers only had minor injuries.
