Two people were killed and two others — including a young boy — were seriously injured when a car ran off Interstate 78 and crashed into some trees.

It was not clear what caused the crash, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. Thursday in the westbound lanes of Interstate 78 in Bernards Township.

State police tell the Star-Ledger that 45-year-old Tonya Gordon of Somerville and 20-year-old Natasha Melendez, whose hometown was not immediately known, were ejected from the car. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 20-year-old Davante Gordon of Somerville, was hospitalized in critical condition with undisclosed injuries. Another passenger, 11-year-old Jahmir Herrin of Somerville, was being treated for "moderate injuries."

It's not clear if any of the victims are related
