ATLANTIC CITY — The Atlantic City Fire Department was called to the Tropicana Hotel on Saturday after 14 were trapped in an elevator.

According to the department, the people were stuck in a "blind shaft" for several hours. The department's special operations department used a rope rescue and haul system to lift the passengers more than 100 feet to safety, it said.

“The next opening wasn’t until the 15th floor, so when we began extrication operations it took a considerable amount of time to get each occupant out,” Atlantic City Fire Department Chief Scott Evans told CBS Philadelphia.

Each person had to be put on a harness and exit the elevator to be lifted up. Evans said the people in the elevator were "stressed out."
