New Jersey can be an awfully strange place.

Don't think so? Look up at one of those corner streetsigns once in a while. You've got to wonder ... what were they thinking?

No, really, what were they thinking? Some of those names are downright weird, and we'd love to know their origins. We found a few, and we were befuddled by more.

Got a funky street name in your town? Did we miss one? Leave it in the comments below or hit us up on Twitter at @NJ1015.

  • 8

    Ongs Hat Road, Pemberton

    loading...

The name's apparently a reference to a once-upon-a-time Mr. Ong, a ladies' man who scorned one to many ladies, and whose hat got stomped by an upset lover at a local dance. So say the legends, an upset Ong tossed his hat into the air, where it got caught in the branches of a pine tree and stayed for years.

But Weird NJ asks if Ong's Hat is a "Piney Ghost Town or Gateway to Another Dimension?" The reason is ... well, weird ... and beyond the scope of this list. But we're not going there late at night.
