When a winter storm hits, it is important to be prepared for the worst. High amounts of snow increase chances of people getting stuck in their homes, or even worse, getting stranded on the roads. Here is a list of items you should have in every snowstorm to be ready for an emergency situation.

    Water Bottles

    Although water may seem like an obvious supply to have handy, water is extremely important and shouldn't be overlooked. Not only is water used for drinking, it can be used for bathing, washing dishes, and cooking. It's a good idea to have a backup stock of water ready in your house and in an emergency bag to bring with you on the road if you're traveling during a storm.

    Non Perishable Foods

    Have a cabinet filled with non-perishable goods such as granola bars, canned food items, pasta, and evaporated milk. Most f these items can be eaten out of the package and require minimal heating. It's also a good idea to pack non perishable food items in an emergency bag while out on the road.

    A blackout could happen at any time during a snowstorm. Keep plenty of flashlights in an accessible place, as well as in emergency kit when traveling.

    During a power outage it's important to rely on battery operated appliances. Stock up on batteries of every size, that way you don't run the risk of an essential appliance losing power.

    Candles serve as a source of light and heat during a power outage. Keep an ample supply of candles and matches ready in case of an emergency.

    Battery Operated Radio or TV

    It's crucial to stay up to date with the news during an emergency situation. It's a good idea to invest in a battery operated radio or television so you don't miss out on important updates and details about the storm.

    Warm Blankets

    If you're traveling during a snowstorm, be sure to have blankets ready in an emergency kit in your car. If you get stuck on the road you'll be able to stay warm.

    It's more likely for an accident to happen during a blackout. If you're snowed in it'll be harder to get to the hospital or pharmacy. Have a first aid kit ready so that any emergencies can be fixed immediately.
