It seemed almost darkly poetic that on the last full day in office for the president who was largely regarded as having botched the federal government’s response to the pandemic the nation would hit the 400,000 mark in COVID deaths.

What started as something we all hoped was being overhyped and would just magically disappear is still with us a year later. The incoming CDC director says we can anticipate another 100,000 deaths by this time next month.

Most people who get it will be fine. Many will have no symptoms at all, which is one thing that makes this novel coronavirus so deadly. Yet it is destined to kill half a million Americans and not even money or fame can make a difference.
