Authorities say the incident occurred early Sunday morning in the city's South Ward. A woman notified a police lieutenant patrolling in a marked SUV that she had been robbed at gunpoint.

The 25-year veteran spotted the vehicle described by the woman at about 7 a.m., and a chase ensued.

After the vehicle crashed into a house, five suspects fled. Police Director Eugene Venable says one turned and pointed a gun at the lieutenant. The lieutenant fired once, hitting the suspect in the chest.

The unidentified suspect was taken to University Hospital, and the lieutenant was taken for observation. No other injuries were reported.

Two other suspects were captured, and two remained at large.
